With the first generation of Sprinter Vans debuting in Europe in 1995 featuring high-traction rear-wheel drive, direct-injection diesel engine, and a spacious cab. Initially, the Sprinter van was produced as a commercial vehicle. However, in 2001, the Sprinter Cargo Van and Sprinter Passenger Van models officially launched in the United States under the Freightliner brand which produced over 150,000 units.

In 2007, the second generation Sprinter van debuted in the United States. By this time, the latest generation of Electric Stability Program ESP, 4 Adaptive ESP becomes standard. Also, it becomes one of the cleanest diesel engines courtesy of blueTec SCR. In addition, some technological advancements such as Active Safety Plus Package with PARKTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, and Highbeam Assist were available.
These technological advancements brought Sprinter to the forefront in the world of light-duty vans. However, Mercedes-Benz continued to push the envelope. For 2015 The Sprinter Van came with a 4×4 option (only on V6 models), a new “Super High Roof” configuration and extended service periods of up to 20,000 miles.
